Some Winners and Multitasking

10 mile run. finally. I’ve been wanting a 10 miler since Sunday. thursday pulled through and gave me such a run. I can’t really classify this run as anything.  it wasn’t a progression, or speed work, or slow work, really. it could be called the slightly disappointing run that felt a lot faster than it was but when reviewing the garmin splits doesnt seem as impressive as when it was happening. that’s fine by me.  7:17 pace. A for effort. I just wanted 10 miles.  greedy runner.  the humidity made it a bit intense. but I really do love running in the heat and the feeling of a great, sweaty, leave it all on the pavement run.  the only intention I had was not to run this fast or with too much effort.  the first few miles cruised by at a good pace, a hill killed my legs.  I slowed down to around 8min/mile for the last couple and picked it back up for the last one home. a nice assortment of paces going on.  often times, my pace is determined by how many miles I want to get in and how much time I have.  I rarerly go out and say I’m going to just go run 10 miles, and I’ll get back whenever.  the faster i run, the quicker I get home and the more miles I can fit in.  30 miles for the week.  one more running day.  and onto a complete rest day tomorrow. no stair master. no run.
By 7:45, when I got home, the day was well underway.
10 sweaty miles in for me
Lawn mowed by hubs
Dog sprayed by a skunk. or he rolled in dead skunk. we haven’t officially determined.
Dog bathed by hubs.
Little lady has gone through three outfit changes. because they like to play in dirt. and they secretly like to punish me with copious amounts of laundry.
Little buddy has fire trucked and made many a disaster since his 5:15am rising.
I had a moment of panic this morning, when for some reason I noticed the bottle of honey mustard dressing…near empty. this is my new favorite condiment and must be on my flat out wrap everyday. we had to get to the grocery store anyway because I was in danger of stretching Luke’s last diaper for far longer than it should be on his little bum, but now it became an emergency. I had grand plans of errand running with 2 kids this am when #1 was at school, but I decided I would rather waste the morning getting absolutely nothing done at all and tote 3 kids all over town in 100 degree weather this afternoon. the joys of procrastination. thank God there was enough honey mustard left for my lunchtime wrap.
My day revolves around Luke’s midday nap. where I try to cram as much as possible in to that possible 1.5 hour window where he is not brushing the window sills with his toothbrush or sitting in the bathroom sink covering himself in band aids. I’ve tried babyproofing. no go. he’s not a baby. he’s an adorable freak of toddlerhood nature. one that should have 12 eyes on him at all times. anyway, I try to get stuff done while he slumbers. Anna desperately wanted me to enjoy the misery of the outdoors with her, but I had this enormously neglected pile of laundry that needed to be folded. mostly because I was on a rescue mission for a lost compression sock and running skirt that were in there somewhere. little brighty suggested I bring the laundry outside. such a problem solver. that’s what I did.
To maximize the 1.5 hour maximum reprieve, my plan was to fold laundry, rescue my sock, get a little strength training in and perhaps do a little blogger, and hang with the kids – all at the same time. multitasking. making it happen. getting things done.  laundry outside, little QT with my baby girl, little tlc for the muscles and a little catch up on the pesky house chores.  kind of.
sweltering. as soon as I made a dent in the pile and resurrected my long lost running necessities, I moved onto a tiny, little lunge/core session.  I also ALWAYS multitask with my workouts. legs/arms/core, whatever I can fit into one exercise, I cram it in there. I do a little shoulder press when I come out of the lunge. fancy pants. I also like the curtsy lunges – I feel like they target the inner thigh a bit better.  I’m no trainer, so I’m not really qualified for that kind of fancy trainer talk. just my experience.
my personal photographer.
This was the first, very short, strength workout where my bum elbow wasn’t feeling so bum. the first time I could hold the weight like that in almost a month. I still can’t do quite a bit of strength training because it hurts, but there’s progress.  and a lot more sweat. the air was suffocating. that’s why it was a pretty short one.  Better than nothing.  if you don’t want to do a workout, at least do something and call it your better than nothing. something is always better than nothing, unless it has to do with dishes, laundry or perhaps jail time.
I like doing the leg strength workouts on the harder run days – after the harder run – so that by the time the next real hard workout comes, my legs are recovered and back to fresh.
as always, lots more fun and exciting things went down this afternoon, as I’m sure you can only imagine, all of which the details I will torture you with.  beginning now. three kids and an unshowered, slightly haggard looking mama really know how to have a good time on a Thursday afternoon. although, I did put on my athletic best.
oh my. it is possible to be 30 with a training bra sized chest after having 3 kids. proof. fantastic. wouldn’t really have it any other way. ok, maybe an A cup way, but you gotta love and work with what you’ve got. all I got.
if you consider a little Barnes and Noble/TJ Maxx/Super Stop and Shop too much fun to handle, then we had too. much. fun. BN was the first stop.
we left it in only slightly worse condition then when we entered
Then we ventured on to Tj’s, where you get the Maxx for the minimum, so catchy, only to make a return.  Luke was a ticking time bomb.
we finished off the fanatics with the grocery store. it only took one cookie and two lollipops to keep Luke in his seat. and then he ran laps around the house.  awesome.
Luke has a fresh diaper.  I have my mustard. mission accomplished.
Ok, fine.  you want winners??? I’VE GOT WINNERS!!!
randomly selected, here are the two winners of the Mizuno mezamashii giveaway:
I REALLY would love to get you ALL free sneaks, but my hubs wouldnt like that and Mizuno doesn’t love me that much.  I loved all of the comments and the great reasons you should win, like it’s my birthday, that would be the best present ever!!! I think I could think of a few better things than free sneaks.  but I’m high maintenance sometimes. I love how many NEW runners there are out there, definitely check out the Mizuno line of sneakers – there is something for everyone. really, I’m sorry you can’t all get free shoes.  but, to try to make up for it, I selected ONE MORE RANDOM WINNER!!!  the third winner is…
Pretty please email me ASAP so that I can get you all Mezamashii’d out and hooked up with some sweet mizunos!
I will choose backup winners if I do not hear from the selected winners by Saturday. I said Friday, but I’m late getting this post up, so I’ll give you lovelies an extra day. because I’m nice like that.
Business – I got quite a few emails yesterday and I promise I will email you back!!!  be patient with me, I’m now officially on summer break and I’m a little frightened. but I will get back to you.
What is your favorite ‘discount’ clothing store to shop at?

What is your favorite condiment?

How many ‘rest’ days do you take a week?  I’m really curious about this one. It’s hard for me to take a rest day.

About msfitrunner

I am a 29 year old stay at home, hardworking mom to my three little loves! My oldest little darling is 5, little sis is 4 and baby brother is almost 2. I have been married to my Mr. Wonderful for almost 7 years (ahhh!). My faith and my family is my rock, and I have a newfound LOVE for running. Maybe it's more of a necessity at this point - to maintain household peace and my own sanity, but whatever it is, it's working for me and I'm loving the racing. The vegan world has been calling my name, so I am testing out those waters as well! That's a tough one with three little picky eaters at home, but I am having fun coming up with new recipes and trying out new things. Follow along as I chronicle this crazy running life, and ALL the craziness that goes with it!

  1. Oh my word I have to crack up about the boob comment. After nursing my second (about 3.5+ years of nursing and pregnancy) and losing nearly half a cup each time I called my mother near tears and said, “I never knew nothing could sag so much”. Now I’ve adjusted to my 30’s by accepting my barely there chest and rocking the training bras…well..because I can.

  2. I tend to take one proper rest day but have one other day of cardio rest (i.e solely strength training and stretching), which feels like a rest day. Your kids are so cute, holding hands on the way to the store!

  3. I like TJ’s too and Nordstrom Rack. My favorite condiment used to be Ranch but I’m going gluten and dairy free so now I don’t know, maybe I’ll try honey mustard 🙂 currently I take too many rest days, next week I start training again and plan to take 1 total rest day but still probably walk a couple miles. Your kids are adorable by the way!

    • Yes, try mustard!!;) so many varieties! I stay away from dairy as much as possible, but don’t pay too much attention to gluten. A Nordstrom rack just opened near me, and it’s on my places to visit list:)

  4. I’m also cracking up at your chest size section. I’m 32 with two kids and mine are pretty much the same size as you. Sometimes I really hate it, and yet other times I realize we have it better. My favorite discount retailer is Marshalls with TJ Max being a close second (and they’re the same company anyways). I only get to run 3-4 days a week leaving me with 3-4 days a week of rest from running. I’d like to run more. But I work 24 hour shifts and I’m prone to posterior shin splints flaring up so it just is….what it is. I do cross train and/or lift on those days I don’t run though.

    • Good to know I’m not the only one with chest issues:) I have finally figured out that I can’t run too many days in a row or I will have all sorts of shin problems. I have to get more miles in on the days I run and take a couple days off. Trial and error!

    • Allyssa!!! I’ve had posterior shin splints for 5 weeks! Do you have any helpful hints on how to get rid of them? I’ve been icing, stretching my calves, and doing no cardio!

  5. Look at those biceps! Whhhooooeeee, your blog name should be all ms all legs and muscles;) I’m one of those peeps that heads out the door for a 10 miler with no pace in mind, and I like it that way. No watch and no worries. But I work from home where showers aren’t required and I don’t have kids…so rules are loose in my home.

  6. Woo-hoo!! I’m so excited that I won! It’s perfect timing- I desperately need new shoes. 🙂 I’ll email you. Rest days- I take one complete rest day a week, usually Friday before a long run Sat. I prefer working legs on harder run days, too, makes a lot of sense. What is it about having kids that shrinks the bust? I’ve had the same experience!

  7. Is hummus a condiment? If so, that’s my fave. I know all too well about your multi-tasking. My multi-tasking is usually due to the fact that with kids, I forget what I was doing before I was interrupted, so I have laundry and everything else going on at once. I usually rest one week day, and usually on Sundays. I have no problem taking rest days or going slow on a run. I have no choice because I am not fast!

    • Strength is always hard – try to make it fun, there are a lot of great videos out there as well that make it fly by. Just think, you are building strong bones by strength training, something all women need, especially as we get older!:)

  8. I rest a lot. And I am not ashame of it. 🙂 When I am not running, I do try to move around with my dog. Paddy Wag doesn’t take her walks slowly.
Your kids are adorable. Especially love the “Daredevil” picture. That smile is precious.
Favorite discount store: TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Sometimes Ross.

P.S.: I was “sent over” by SR. I’m glad I found your blog. I am currently pregnant and am cutting back on my running, doing mostly walking with short bursts of waddlings. You give me motivation to get back into shape after I pop this sweet baby out of my body. I am envious of your arms and body!

    • Oh, it’s always an original flatout wrap, filled with all sorts of random things – usually egg whites, avocado, tomato slices or fresh red pepper, spicy honey mustard, hummus and sliced up pickles – delish:) or tuna mixed with the hummus instead of egg whites for protein. Probably sounds awful, but I love it!

  9. I just found your blog via SR – so glad she featured you! I really have enjoyed the posts I have read:)

Favorite discount store – TJ Maxx and Marshalls for sure! Just got the cutest running skirt from TJ. Favorite condiment – spicy mustard – YUM! and I love Flat Out too.

What Mizuno’s do you wear? I need a bit of a stability shoe and my last 3-4 pairs have been the Saucony Omni which I do like but have been hearing GREAT things about the Mizunos and want to give them a try. I need a bit of stability as I pronate a bit.

Nice arms and adorable kiddos! and you are a WICKED FAST runner!

  10. My favorite discount store is by far TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Homegoods. My entire home is outfitted in Homegoods finds! I have a small chest as well but not quite as small as yours. Once in a while I’ll get discouraged if a top I wanted to buy looks terrible because of their size, but then I just think about my sister who has pretty large ones and realize again why I’d rather have them small!

I’ll have to try out what you mentioned yesterday in reply to my comment about trying out a progression run in time increments…I could also go to the local track as there are quite a few near me (but I don’t really care for running on tracks). Thanks for the tips!

  11. I force myself to take at least one rest day a week, although I wish I didn’t “have” to. I’ve just been super injury prone the past few years, so am happy to have worked up to 4 to 5 days a week of running (I’ll swim or bike the other days).

“is it possible to be 30 with a training bra sized chest after having 3 kids”, well, I’m 41 with 2 kids and am right there with you!

  12. Can I just say how much I love your comment about your boobs. Your boobs/body looks very similar to mine (although your’s is a bit more ripped and sexy!) but I’ve been really getting sucked into the mindset of bigger is sexy when it comes to boobs. And honestly, the thought has crossed my mind a time or two lately about just going up by just a teeeny tiny bit to feel sexier in my clothes but seeing you in this picture rockin’ your awesome bod and beautiful self…well, I think the smaller boobs are the way to go if you have em. Rock what you have! yes yes! Thank you for this. I needed to read your blog today. And I can’t fit an A because of the width being too narrow so I wear a B cup but it doesn’t come close to being filled! The handful bra…now that’s a great invention. The handful pads in lulu bras…there’s another one of my secrets. xoxo

    • Hi beautiful mama!! YOU are in amazing shape, and maybe the small chest is a big blessing for us runner moms – one less thing to have to tame 🙂 I barely even bother wearing a bra, I usually wear some form of sports bra because any underwire digs into my chest. Such life problems:) But, I also get somewhat self conscious sometimes because there’s not much there…it is what it is! ps, LOVE your blog and your genuine, honest tone. Can’t wait to see you rock that marathon;) xoxo

  13. Congrats to all the winners! As for rest days, I take 1 Sunday’s. As a fitness instructor and training for races all the time, I am ready for a rest by Sunday. Some sunday’s I feel like I should workout, but I force myself to rest because I really don’t want to hit that burn out point that happens sometimes.
