Some Winners and Multitasking

Standard
Workout

10 mile run. finally. I’ve been wanting a 10 miler since Sunday. thursday pulled through and gave me such a run. I can’t really classify this run as anything.  it wasn’t a progression, or speed work, or slow work, really. it could be called the slightly disappointing run that felt a lot faster than it was but when reviewing the garmin splits doesnt seem as impressive as when it was happening. that’s fine by me.  7:17 pace. A for effort. I just wanted 10 miles.  greedy runner.  the humidity made it a bit intense. but I really do love running in the heat and the feeling of a great, sweaty, leave it all on the pavement run.  the only intention I had was not to run this fast or with too much effort.  the first few miles cruised by at a good pace, a hill killed my legs.  I slowed down to around 8min/mile for the last couple and picked it back up for the last one home. a nice assortment of paces going on.  often times, my pace is determined by how many miles I want to get in and how much time I have.  I rarerly go out and say I’m going to just go run 10 miles, and I’ll get back whenever.  the faster i run, the quicker I get home and the more miles I can fit in.  30 miles for the week.  one more running day.  and onto a complete rest day tomorrow. no stair master. no run.
By 7:45, when I got home, the day was well underway.
10 sweaty miles in for me

I had a moment of panic this morning, when for some reason I noticed the bottle of honey mustard dressing…near empty. this is my new favorite condiment and must be on my flat out wrap everyday. we had to get to the grocery store anyway because I was in danger of stretching Luke’s last diaper for far longer than it should be on his little bum, but now it became an emergency. I had grand plans of errand running with 2 kids this am when #1 was at school, but I decided I would rather waste the morning getting absolutely nothing done at all and tote 3 kids all over town in 100 degree weather this afternoon. the joys of procrastination. thank God there was enough honey mustard left for my lunchtime wrap.
My day revolves around Luke’s midday nap. where I try to cram as much as possible in to that possible 1.5 hour window where he is not brushing the window sills with his toothbrush or sitting in the bathroom sink covering himself in band aids. I’ve tried babyproofing. no go. he’s not a baby. he’s an adorable freak of toddlerhood nature. one that should have 12 eyes on him at all times. anyway, I try to get stuff done while he slumbers. Anna desperately wanted me to enjoy the misery of the outdoors with her, but I had this enormously neglected pile of laundry that needed to be folded. mostly because I was on a rescue mission for a lost compression sock and running skirt that were in there somewhere. little brighty suggested I bring the laundry outside. such a problem solver. that’s what I did.
To maximize the 1.5 hour maximum reprieve, my plan was to fold laundry, rescue my sock, get a little strength training in and perhaps do a little blogger, and hang with the kids – all at the same time. multitasking. making it happen. getting things done.  laundry outside, little QT with my baby girl, little tlc for the muscles and a little catch up on the pesky house chores.  kind of.
sweltering. as soon as I made a dent in the pile and resurrected my long lost running necessities, I moved onto a tiny, little lunge/core session.  I also ALWAYS multitask with my workouts. legs/arms/core, whatever I can fit into one exercise, I cram it in there. I do a little shoulder press when I come out of the lunge. fancy pants. I also like the curtsy lunges – I feel like they target the inner thigh a bit better.  I’m no trainer, so I’m not really qualified for that kind of fancy trainer talk. just my experience.
my personal photographer.
This was the first, very short, strength workout where my bum elbow wasn’t feeling so bum. the first time I could hold the weight like that in almost a month. I still can’t do quite a bit of strength training because it hurts, but there’s progress.  and a lot more sweat. the air was suffocating. that’s why it was a pretty short one.  Better than nothing.  if you don’t want to do a workout, at least do something and call it your better than nothing. something is always better than nothing, unless it has to do with dishes, laundry or perhaps jail time.
I like doing the leg strength workouts on the harder run days – after the harder run – so that by the time the next real hard workout comes, my legs are recovered and back to fresh.
as always, lots more fun and exciting things went down this afternoon, as I’m sure you can only imagine, all of which the details I will torture you with.  beginning now. three kids and an unshowered, slightly haggard looking mama really know how to have a good time on a Thursday afternoon. although, I did put on my athletic best.
oh my. it is possible to be 30 with a training bra sized chest after having 3 kids. proof. fantastic. wouldn’t really have it any other way. ok, maybe an A cup way, but you gotta love and work with what you’ve got. all I got.
if you consider a little Barnes and Noble/TJ Maxx/Super Stop and Shop too much fun to handle, then we had too. much. fun. BN was the first stop.
we left it in only slightly worse condition then when we entered
Then we ventured on to Tj’s, where you get the Maxx for the minimum, so catchy, only to make a return.  Luke was a ticking time bomb.
we finished off the fanatics with the grocery store. it only took one cookie and two lollipops to keep Luke in his seat. and then he ran laps around the house.  awesome.
Luke has a fresh diaper.  I have my mustard. mission accomplished.
Ok, fine.  you want winners??? I’VE GOT WINNERS!!!
randomly selected, here are the two winners of the Mizuno mezamashii giveaway:
I REALLY would love to get you ALL free sneaks, but my hubs wouldnt like that and Mizuno doesn’t love me that much.  I loved all of the comments and the great reasons you should win, like it’s my birthday, that would be the best present ever!!! I think I could think of a few better things than free sneaks.  but I’m high maintenance sometimes. I love how many NEW runners there are out there, definitely check out the Mizuno line of sneakers – there is something for everyone. really, I’m sorry you can’t all get free shoes.  but, to try to make up for it, I selected ONE MORE RANDOM WINNER!!!  the third winner is…
Pretty please email me ASAP so that I can get you all Mezamashii’d out and hooked up with some sweet mizunos!
I will choose backup winners if I do not hear from the selected winners by Saturday. I said Friday, but I’m late getting this post up, so I’ll give you lovelies an extra day. because I’m nice like that.
Business – I got quite a few emails yesterday and I promise I will email you back!!!  be patient with me, I’m now officially on summer break and I’m a little frightened. but I will get back to you.
What is your favorite ‘discount’ clothing store to shop at?

What is your favorite condiment?

How many ‘rest’ days do you take a week?  I’m really curious about this one. It’s hard for me to take a rest day.

Long Runs and Trail Races

Workouts

Let’s start with Saturday’s long run – my longest run since I’ve returned to running after the April marathons and a lot of time off before that from shin splints. This was my 5th week back, and I am just starting to incorporate a little speed to test out my legs and start to give them a feel for faster.  My mileage has increased over the past five weeks and my longer run on Saturday got me to 50 miles for last week. yippee. happy week.

Saturday – 14 miles. I don’t know the time. I ran 6 alone and 8 with a friend. I know the 8 friendly miles were about exactly 8 minute miles. The solo miles were closer to 7:30. Perfect 14 miles.

Sunday – 6 miles. confession, I partnered up with garmin for this one. I just felt the need.  I had no real intentions of speed. I often don’t know what the run will hold these days until I start running, which is kind of nice – soon enough they will all be planned out. the gps didn’t kick in for about 3/10 of a mile, but the timer started right away so my time was accurate but my distance was off. Blah blah blah. Feet start moving and this turned into a let’s make this a marathon goal pace run, because that sounds like a fun thing to do on fathers day. which turned into, let’s just run and see how it goes. it went pretty well. I get all mathematical with pace figuring sometimes, and judging by my scientific calculations, the first 1.3 miles were about 7:20 pace.  truly ground breaking stuff here.  the average pace was about 6:37.  the last 4 were- 6:30, 6:16, 6:32, 6:17, then a 3/4 mile jog to make 6.  happy with that too. getting a feel for speed again.

Saturday had all sorts of family shenanigans going on. It’s just what we do when the weather’s nice and the hubs and I are feeling like letting our children have an utterly enjoyable childhood. homemade slip ‘n slide.

There’s nothing like throwing your children down a tarp of running water at lightning speed.  contesting who could get the farthest distance off the tarp and into the middle of the yard.  pure fun. for parent and child alike.

We did some driveway bike riding with our best buds.

biking is so much more fun with friends. They go everywhere luke goes.  boy needs some friends.  riding this little bike is our favorite past time. 5:30 am, Luke and froggy’s are riding the bike

Most importantly, Shelby is not living in a paper cup anymore. we didn’t want to get reported for animal cruelty so we got her (or him, I’m still not sure) a proper home.

I don’t know how, but my daughters unconditional love for this hermit crab has rubbed off on me and I have grown fondly attached to Shelby.  adorable little thing.

Fathers day started with a family trip up to Massachusetts.  the Hubs ran a trail half marathon.  it was actually 13.5 miles to be exact. we piled in the car with lots of snacks and went to cheer on our favorite daddy.  I usually get slightly insanely jealous of other people running races when I am not. I didn’t really get jealous of this one. maybe just a little bit after, but not before. 3,000 feet in elevation gain in the first 3 miles. frightening. you can have this one all to yourself hubs. I would much rather fish Luke out of a nearby stream.

Mt. Grey lock in Mass.  you get to go straight up that mountain over yonder. real fun.  lady in the middle of the field was doing some serious warmups. I hope she didn’t injure herself before she even got going.

Kidings and I, and hubs’ friend drove to the 7.5 mile mark to wait for him to come through. this was rough and tough trail running. down and dirty. I surely would have dislocated some thing had I attempted this. I am better at spectating these things for now.  The kids and I did just fine.  we found a log and claimed it. ticks and all. this is the wild outdoors.

we packed plenty of food and hung out.  because food always makes kids happy and pleasant.  you would think 4 lbs of grapes, 2 lbs of strawberries, bananas, pb&j sandwiches, crackers and what not would last awhile…they didn’t.  these kids can plow through some produce in no time.

I don’t know what they are looking at, but Luke is missing out on something spectacular.

Hubs finished in 2:23.  fantastic. he loves the trail running. love may actually be a strong word for his feelings about trail running. if he has to run, he would prefer trails.

It’s good that we run differently. It’s hard enough sometimes that we both run. I will do an ultra trail run in the next two years.  But for now, I like the road and he likes the trails. and it keeps us nicely balanced.  and I don’t have to make him feel badly about beating him on all the trail runs.

I got in touch with my inner chef and prepared a lovely fathers day dinner. the requested first course was nachos with avocado. done.  yum.

The picture of health. you’ve got to just enjoy food like this sometimes. all in moderation and not all the time. hubs definitely worked for it after that trail run.

Followed by beef tenderloin on the grill, sweet potatoes and corn on the cob. dee – lish.

I don’t really sit down to eat most nights. I hover. and get water refills and second helpings and cut up food and take memorable photographs that will never get printed and usually end up finishing off whatever is not eaten. so healthy.

I hope everyone had a great fathers day and happy races if that’s what you did this weekend.

Don’t forget to check out the GIVEAWAY

Tell me about your weekend??

Racing?  did anyone ‘bump’ into Kara Goucher at the half marathon championships??

Grilling?

Slip ‘n Sliding???

Healthy or not so healthy eating?

Mizuno Loves Me. A Giveaway

Standard
Ok, they love me and approximately 600 other people. and anyone who purchases their shoes. but we’re going to talk about me and Mizuno.  and then we’re going to talk about how that can benefit you.  before all of this crazy running talk commences, we are going to talk about the
Workout!
Very uneventful. cross training day.  I’ll give you 3 guesses what I did.  It starts with stair and ends with master and lives in my basement. We got cozy for about an hour doing the speed interval setting. Love.  add on 10 minutes of strength in the driveway while my crazies harassed each other and covered themselves in chalk at 6:30am. Happy Tuesday morning.
Back to Mizuno.  Remember I said I might have an opportunity for you to get some sneaks?  Well, it all started with this…
Mizuno sent me this very personal, thought out, hand written invitation….along with 599 other people. It still felt personal.
The Mezamashii Project

Mezamashii means brilliant in Japanese.
According to their invitation, Mizuno is
‘on a quest to deliver more Mezamashii — more ecstatic, electric, wind  in your heart running.
More brilliant running

Man, who doesn’t want THAT kind of running?!?!?

They continue on in the invite by saying,
‘Instead of spending millions of dollars on advertising to talk about our shoes, we’re putting our money where your feet are — by giving you a free pair.’

Mizuno, you are so smart. I could not agree more with your marketing logic.

See.  They do love me. And I love them putting their money where my feet are.
I am going to share the Mizuno love by putting their money where YOUR feet are.
Every one deserves some more Mezamashii in their run.  Everyone needs a little more brilliance in their training. Mizuno wants to make that happen for you.
Mizuno was my first real pair of sneakers. I wore them for my first marathon. I loved them. After over three years, I’ve come back to them.
I’ve since started running in a more minimal shoe. I LOVE the Musha for that.
Musha to the right. Precision to the left.
I am also currently loving the Wave Presicion and the Wave Rider 15.

Wave rider

Wave rider pre run
I might also have just gotten the Wave elixir.
Those are pretty sweet too.  Mizuno has definitely figured out how to make a brilliant shoe in performance and appearance.
I want you to experience the brilliance.

Pardon the Interruption…and a WINNER

Standard

Your regularly scheduled blog will return at some point this weekend….just as soon as we (as in the fam and I) finish doing fun things like holding 5 minute planks

iphone pics 716

testing out new lululemon gear (ok, that’s just me, not a family activity, that would be weird and unusual)….cool racerback tank because you can never have enough of those little delights, and the sweatshirt.  happy bday.  stylin.

iphone pics 715

trying to avoid broken bones and skinned knees without proper safety gear while rollerblading…safety is overrated.

iphone pics 717

my girl.  showing off her toddler six pack.  is a 4 year old still a toddler?  probably not.  she’s more like a mini adult.

and not running.  (I actually feel pretty good, but still not running.  and it is TORTURE.  complete and utter torture.  to not run when it is 75 and sunny out.  and can think of nothing more cruel, truly.  but smart runner Katie is really shining through right now and we’re going with it)

But you can be sure I will fill you in on why I’m still not running.  I can be sure you can guess why I’m not running.  I’m like a broken record.  something to do with shins and weird leg discomfort or something.  I don’t know.  but I will also fill you in on the good things I’ve learned and why I think injuries and little setbacks make us stronger runners.  deep thoughts to come.

You can be sure I will fill you in on 30th bday shenanigans.  which really weren’t shenanigans at all.  because I am a 30 year old mother of three.  I’m pretty sure I forgot what shenanigans are like.  the last time I partook in shenanigans was in Boston and I swore that I would never do it again.  holding firm.  the only shenanigans I may have partaken in last night would have been something called a peach kicker.  it was tasty.  and it was singular.  leading to zero shenanigans.

And the WINNER of the Sweaty Band giveaway is….randomly generated….

marah on April 19, 2012 at 5:24 pm said: [Edit]

hey katie… it’s your bday, and i love the pink/brown band, so i had to enter! my fav accessory to run with is…. Lucy (she makes me feel fast ;) but seriously, it’s actually a very old, very thin, very comfy, very broken in lululemon long sleeve shirt that keeps me warm or cool when needed. i swear this shirt has a brain and knows exactly what i need it to do.

Congrats, Marah!!  I will get these to you asap so that you can enjoy the deliciousness that are Sweaty Bands!

Now everyone else go buy one from their website!  and please still be my friend even though you didn’t win!  There were a lot of comments and I promise I will come up with some more giveaways in the future.  and I really wanted to comment on all of your comments about your favorite gear and how this is the greatest blog you have ever read running accessories, but I just couldn’t do it all.  and thank you for all of your wonderful birthday wishes!!  makes a girl feel special.  not old at all.

I know some of you are racing this weekend, and some are running your first race, whether it be a marathon, or a 5k – GOOD LUCK to EVERYONE!!!  whether it be your first race (good for you for getting out there!!) or you 100th race, speed and fantastically perfect weather be with you.

What are some of your fun weekend plans??

Do you like to rollerblade?  I really dislike that tingly feeling that you get on the bottom of your feet when you rollerblade.  just me?  or anyone else experience that?

SWEATY BAND Giveaway!

Standard

In honor of my Birthday week (yes it’s a capital Birthday because it’s important), I’m going to give you a gift!  yay!!!  I’m so excited to have a GREAT accessory to giveaway to YOU lovely people!

The lovely ladies over at Sweaty Bands sent me TWO bands to giveaway to one lucky reader.  actually, they gave me permission to keep one and give one away, but being the oh so generous person that I am – I want you to have both of them! (I didn’t even try them out during my workout this morning, promise)

Here’s a little 411 about the brains and talent behind Sweaty Bands…

From the Sweaty Band website and creator, Donna –

Hello! My name is Donna. I’m a married mother of three. I have been teaching group fitness classes and personal training for 20 years. It is my passion and my hobby. I started making Sweaty Bands as a way to supplement my income. I have an obsession with having the freshest tunes to keep my students motivated. My entire paycheck was going to new music! Selling a few Sweaty Bands out of my gymbag was a way for me to keep buying music and pay for continuing education. Sweaty Bands have provided me the opportunity to do what I love and make a little money on the side. I hope you LOVE them as much as I do!

Fitfully Yours,
Donna

I wore my brand new sweaty band for my marathon.  I love to wear headbands when I run.  As I mentioned in my race recap – they don’t slip at all!  I ran the whole marathon in it, drove home, chased kids, took and ice bath, blah blah blah – still in place.  fantastic.  and adorable.  and a necessity for any active little lady.  or for the little lady that doesn’t have the opportunity to shower immediately after every workout because three children are running around like banchi’s and she needs to cover the greasiness that is her hair.  it works for that too.

They have a TON of patterns and styles, so go check it out.  do it.

These are the ones I am giving away

iphone pics 661

*little disclaimer, Sweaty Bands did not pay me or bribe me with large amounts of chocolate or a lifetime supply of sweaty bands or lululemon gear to say nice and wonderful things about them.  these are my own opinions based on my own experience with my pretty little sweaty band.

My Rules to Play the Game –

1. To enter giveaway, leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite running accessory.  It can’t be your sneakers.  you obviously need sneakers to run.

2. Additional entry – follow (or subscribe, not sure what it actually says) my blog via email and leave a separate comment telling me that you did.  you can’t just unsubscribe after.  that’s not nice.  it will probably hurt my feelings.  I’m sensitive sometimes.

*edited to add – if you already follow my blog, leave a separate comment as well saying so- equal playing ground for you faithful followers.

3. Another additional entry – “like” Sweaty Bands on Facebook and leave another comment telling me that you did that as well.

That’s it.  I’m giving you 3 opportunities to get these babies.

Your opportunity to enter ends on my birthday, Thursday 4/19 at 9pm.  I will choose ONE winner (via random.org) (I have to make that clear because the last little giveaway I did my husband was concerned I was going to giveaway books to anyone that commented.  not so my friends.  one lucky winner.  but go buy yourself one if you don’t win.  easy peasy)

Make sense?  Exciting.  Have at it.  Happy Tuesday.  Happy Katie Birthday Week.  to you.
